La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux Voiture Locale 456
November 2005 From the Desk of L’Editor Chef’s Words The times, they are troubling. We are all fearful for our troops still in combat or in the combat zone. They face dangers that we never had to face before. It does
not sound like combat there most of the time; it sounds like our troops are fighting street gangs and murderers rather than
enemy troops. Keep them in your prayers. I would like to take
this opportunity to welcome Harold R. Ale (JR) into our midst. Welcome JR and
join us at our promenade on the 3rd Thursday of each month. We have sold all our
tickets for the Nurses Training. Voyageur Tatro has Children and Youth pins. They are only two dollars each. See him
and get your pin. The Correspondant has Box Car pins and they are also only two
dollars. See Gail, the Commissaire Intendente for tickets for the Ham raffle. Our next promenade is
on Thursday, November 17th at 8:00 PM at Post 238 in Hughesville. I would like to take
this time and wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. To all members who are
not feeling well, you are in our prayers and we hope to see you soon. Ed Miller Chef de Gare The Membership drive so far
this year is doing well. We still have a number of members who have yet to renew
their membership and remit their dues for 2006. Please send your dues ($15 for
membership, an additional $5 if you wish to be a member of the Mid-Atlantic Association, Box Car, and Carvelle Star), to Warren Dearstine, 26252 S. Sandgates Road, Mechanicsville, MD 20659. We are looking forward to making 100% plus going over the top this year. FLAGS FOR 1ST GRADERS Once again this year, VL 456
is joining with American Legion Post 221, in Avenue, Maryland, to visit local schools in St. Mary’s County to help educate
1st grade students on the American Flag. Flags, plus other items,
will be handed out to 1st graders in four elementary schools. We would
like to extend this program to Charles and Calvert Counties. It is a very worthwhile
program and educational for the students. We are planning to meet at Post 221
at 7:30 AM on November 10, then visit the schools. All are welcome to join us
as we visit the schools. Flags for 1st Graders November 10, 2005 7:30

St. Mary’s Cty Schools Note: VL 456 donated to the American Legion
National Emergency Fund. The Department of Maryland presented checks in excess
of $80,000 to the National Commander on October 4, 2005. In addition, there were
donations sent direct to Legion posts in Louisiana that brought the total to over $90,000.
Donations are still coming in and will be presented to the NEF. Voyageurs
and Legionnaires are to be commended for their outstanding compassion and generosity. |

September 2005 From the desk of L’Editor The Grande Promenade was conducted, 8/5-7/05,
at American Legion Post 135 in Perryville, Maryland. Bill Adcock from VL 1199
was elected as Grand Chef de Gare, 2005-2006. The Awards Banquet and installation
was 8/6. VL 456 nominees for Law Officer of the Year, Trooper Edelen, MSP La
Plata Barrack, and Hero of the Year, Deputy Milam, Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, were honored. Additionally, our own Locale Correspondant, Warren Dearstine, was honored as Voyageur of the Year. All three recipients deserved the honors paid them and VL 456 is honored to have nominated
these most deserving men. This past year was unprecedented in our Law Officer
program. We had 3 MSP and 3 Sheriff’s Offices respond. Our Chef de Gare, Ed Miller, visited each police jurisdiction and personally thanked them for participating,
plus he presented certificates to each nominee to recognize their contributions to public safety. If you have not paid your 2006 dues, please send
your dues, $15 annual, or $20 to include Box Car, Carvelle Star, and Mid-Atlantic, check made out to VL 456, to Warren Dearstine,
26252 S. Sandgates Rd., Mechanicsville, MD 20659. Keep your membership
continuous and help your Voiture make its membership goal this year. Enclosed in this mailing, you will find two books
of Benefit Raffle tickets. The tickets are for a boneless Southern Maryland stuffed
ham that weighs between 20 & 30 lbs. Stuffed ham is unique to Southern Maryland
and makes for delicious eating. The tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. The proceeds from this benefit will go towards 40 & 8 programs, such as the $100 VL 456 recently donated
to the American Legion National Emergency Fund to help Legionnaires and Posts in hurricane ravaged Louisiana. This past year, we tried a bull & oyster roast, but it was not as successful as we had hoped it would
be. This year we are returning to the ham raffle.
Please consider donating or selling these benefit tickets for the stuffed ham.
Send a check, made out to VL 456, to Gail Murdock, 39075 Cedarwood Ct., Mechanicsville, MD 20659. The drawing will take place during the regular promenade on Dec. 15, 2005, and the ham will be delivered
to the winner’s house prior to Christmas. As noted, all proceeds go towards
40 & 8 programs. This is our only general fundraiser for the year and your
support is requested. September 15, 2005 VL 456 Promenade Post
